In the very special case of #Quicksy, #XMPP is used with phone number. Don't know about UX with changing phone number, but I guess, it is … complicated.

Same here. I "forced" friends, family, colleagues to use #Jabber (= #XMPP) by giving them the alternatives #email, #snailmail or Jabber to write to me.
