Have you tried repeated tar's after the read error. What will usually happen is that it will get resynchronized after a short time. If that fails, and you are desparate, you could use a number of cp's to copy sections of the tape into files and then edit the files in some fashion. (Assuming that you have got source files in the tar and you have an editor capable of editing binary data, such as Emacs by Gosling, (you could use Mlisp for the hacking)). I once wrote a program to rebuild VMS tapes that had been zapped, but that wouldn't help you in this case.
