Autzoo.1608 net.rec.birds utzoo!andy Thu Apr 29 16:10:54 1982 Migration at last Birding really picked up on the weekend: southerly winds and warm temperatures. The hawk watch at Grimsby (Niagara Escarpment) turned up 1100 hawks on Saturday and 1796 on Sunday, mostly broad-wings and sharp-shins. Turkey Vultures are back in good numbers. Although there are lots of birds showing up in the extreme south, there is still little variety further north. The weekend 90 miles north of Toronto produced only lots of winter finches, Yellow-rumped and Pine Warblers and the "typical" very early spring birds. Walleye (any fishermen out there?) have not spawned yet--they haven't even moved into fast water. Using that as a gauge, spring "up north" is at least 3 weeks late. Also up north: Ruffed Grouse drumming, Pileates pairing up, Phoebes and Robins building nests. Unusual sightings: Eared Grebe, Black-headed Gull, Piping Plover, Hooded Warbler and Yellow-throated Warbler. There is also a report of House Finches nesting in metro Toronto. Banders at Long Point turned up a Bewick's Wren and Tufted Titmouse. Happy Birding!
