The shell script I just sent needs a * after the group id re:

UID=`grep "^$LOGNAME:" /etc/passwd | sed -e 's/\(.*\):\(.*\):\([0-9][0-9]*\):\([0-9][0-9]*\):\(.*\):\(.*\):\(.*\)/\3/'`
SUBS=`grep "^$UID" /usr/spool/news/.uindex | sed -e 's/.*://' | tr "," "\040"`
echo "options -n $SUBS" > $HOME/.newsrc
echo '$HOME/.newsrc' created

This shell script claims that it will make a .newsrc for everyone in
/etc/passwd:

for user in `sed -e 's/\(.*\):\(.*\):\([0-9][0-9]*\):\([0-9][0-9]*\):\(.*\):\(.*\):\(.*\)/\1/'  $home/.newsrc
	echo "$home/.newsrc" created
done
