i agree with these concerns.
there should be an automatic (or semi-automatic) method of purging the spool
of old directories; the active file of dropped news groups; and most
importantly: the users .newsrc files.
The news administrator usually will manually clean up the spool and active
file; however, the users NEVER think to clean out the .newsrc file
(both in their subscription line as well as the subsequent lines)
How about if  readnews removed anything in .newsrc which was no longer in
the active file??
