I asked this to satisfy my own curiousity. Here are the results of that query: I have received several letters from people who either were members of or had heard of the Society. Not surprisingly, quite a few of them were from Berkeley. Several people have asked what the Society is and how to get in touch with a local group. I have decided to put a short description of the SCA on this newsgroup for them and for general consumption. The Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. is a non-profit, educational institution dedicated to learning about and recreating various aspects of medieval life and culture. North America has been divided into a set of "kingdoms", each semi-autonomous. For example, the Middle Kingdom covers basically the Midwest; the Kingdom of the East covers the northern East Coast; Meridies and Atlantia the southern East Coast and the Gulf Coast (I think--I'm not quite sure); Atenveldt and the West Kingdom the West Coast; Caid the southwest (again i think), and several Principalities who are on their way to becoming kingdoms. <>. Within the kingdoms there exist groups of various sizes, including Shires, Cantons, Households, Baronies, etc. A group's title and status depends on its size. The most flamboyant of SCA activities is, of course, the tournament. We recreate (within the realms of safety) medieval foot combat. Fighters wear real armor, and although wooden and padded weapons are used, the blows are real and the fights are \not/ choreographed. It's seldom that a combatant will break a bone or something similar (usually because he falls on something) but bruises can and do occur. As well as fighting, SCA members take pride in their skills at painting, calligraphy, illumination, woodcraft, metalcraft, singing, dancing, cooking, brewing, storytelling, costuming, and many other activities. If it was done in the Middle Ages, someone in this Society has probably done or tried it. Most SCA groups (though not all) are associated with a local college or University. I will not be on the net this summer, but if anyone is interested in more information or wants to find a group near them, I'll put some addresses to write to later today.
