Think of the possesive forms of some other third person, singular pronouns, i.e. "his" and "hers". Notice that neither has an apostrophe. It's just the same for "its" - without an apostrophe is the possessive, so the other one must be the contraction. Tomorrow, we'll have a quiz on "effect" vs. "affect", and "i.e." vs. "e.g.".
