newspurge bug fix

Subject: newspurge fix
Awhile ago a program newspurge was announced, and has been very useful.
Some small bugs in the handling of the argument list were found and fixed
on the research machine here at BTL; I thought that I'd post them.
Excuse me if the bugs were reported and fixed, and I missed them.
