Here are the answers in order: 1) What does the 'K.' in Ursula K. LeGuin stand for? It stands for Kroeber, her maiden name. Joe was the only one to get this, although watarts!geo was close with Kroeger... 2) What's unusual about the way Isaac Asimov travels to England? Six of the seven replies knew that Asimov doesn't ever fly, being afraid of it. He always takes a cruise. I wouldn't mind doing that, myself... 3) What does Robert A. Heinlein require before he'll talk to you at a convention? Three folks knew that RAH insists that you have given blood recently and have a Red Cross certificate to prove it. They always send a Bloodmobile around to SF conventions that he'll be at, knowing that business will be good... watmath!bstempleton noted that he does this because 'it saved his life once', but didn't tell me any of the details. 4) Whose Nebula did Harlan Elison once steal (it was intended as a joke)? Sigh. Obviously a bunch of Golden Age readers here. NO ONE knew that Elison once stole Ursula K. LeGuin's Nebula at an awards ceremony in which she beat him out. The story was told in the intro to UKL's story in Dangerous Visions. This was the only one that Joe couldn't answer. 5) Under what name did Ursula K. LeGuin publish a story in Playboy? Why was that name used? Joe stated it perfectly: U. K. Leguin -- Ursula claims it was sexism (see Winds Twelve Quarters), that Playboy didn't want anybody to know she was a woman. 6) What confusion surrounded James Tiptree, Jr. for a time? (Sorry if this one's too vague; I can't think of a good way to phrase it.) About half knew that Tiptree is female. There's a pretty funny intro by Silverberg to a Tiptree story in which he outlines the confusion about Tiptree's gender and then goes on to say that, for some set of very good reasons, Tiptree \must/ be male... Sigh. Well, the response wasn't bad on these. I'll have to get some more together... \ / \/\/\/ /\ /\ Pavel Curtis \ \/ / (decvax!cornell!pavel) \/\/ (Pavel.Cornell@Udel) /\/\ / \ ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
