The gold you get or lose is never on the ground or in the leprechauns pack, rather the program just figures out how much (1 or sometimes 5 times what you would find on the ground, which is a random function of your level) and adds or subtracts it from your purse. Since leprechauns are always asleep, even if you step next to them, they are pretty safe unless you are careless. (It's a good idea to move on space at a time in dark rooms or to use the "f" command to avoid accidently bumping into one.) Using arrows and wearing your good armor, and standing at a distance, leprechauns are a good source of gold - using a genocide scroll on them is just plain dumb. You should light the room first if possible, otherwise you have to count spaces to decide when to wield your mace. Also, avoid a leprechaun in a small room, since you should have as many spaces as possible between you and it before you start shooting arrows at it. Clean out the room first. (It doesn't matter if you pick up any gold already in the room first or not. Since there can only be one pile of gold in a room at a time, the program is smart enough to add any bonus for killing a leprechaun to the gold pile on the floor - no penalty or bonus for this.)
