Long has he labored in thy service, lords. He has slain many evil monsters, recovered much treasure for thy greater glory, and mastered many arcane and wonderful arts, delving deeper and deeper into thy great and wondrous dungeons. But now it seems his end draws nigh. He has explored all that he can find of his current level, seeking in vain for a way out or down. Long has he sought some secret passageway or door that might hold the key to this mystery. He has searched thrice three times each section of wall or corridor that seemed likely to contain such a passage, and in the most likely thrice three times three times or more. It has availed him nought. He has quaffed his last unidentified potion; read his last unidentified scroll; zapped his last unidentified wand; put on his last unidentified ring. He has found no aid in them. It has been long indeed since he ate his last piece of food, and he has grown weary and faint from hunger. He is assailed by monsters. He has quested especially long in the direction from which they seem to come, but has found nought. He is dejected and downcast. His strength faileth, and his hit points are low. Still has he stood heroically against many monsters, but now the end approacheth. Oh great and merciful lords, he begs of thee a dying boon, that his rest may be easy. Grant unto him, I beseech thee, a final vision of the level where he stands, that he may know that he did not labor in vain, mocked by some evil fate or the dread demon PROGRAM BUG. As he perishes in battle or at last by his own hand, let his eyes be filled with wonder and understanding of how one with more luck, skill, or wisdom might have found an answer to this riddle that perplexes his wits. I ask it in the name of all those who have labored and perished in thy service, to the greater glory of thy names. ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
