I really enjoy it and hope that everyone keeps up the good work. I thought that I would share with you one of my most interesting cook books. It is called " Bull Cook and Authentic Historical Recipes and Practices". It is written by George Leonard Herter and Berthe E. Herter. The publisher was Herter's, Inc. of Waseca, Minn. I just called up there to find out if the book was still in print and was told by the information operator that they no longer have a listing for them. ( Does anyone out there know if they are still in business? This is the same company that sold outdoor equipment. ) This is the cautious part of my recommendation -- namely that you may not be able to get the book. The title derives from a term in lumber camps and is not really explained in the book. A friend of mine told me once that it referred to the top or best male cook in that camp. The books ( It comes in three volumes. ) contain about 75% colorful history of the recipe, about 15% on technique and 10% on the ingredients. The first volume also contains an elaborate section on winemaking and mixing various alcoholic beverages. In short, it makes for some enjoyable reading while at the same time showing some things that I haven't seen anywhere else. The dishes range from food for camping and hunting to typical fare of famous restaurants ( Well, at least they were famous in '69 when the book that I have was published. ) The author was very authoritarian in his writing voice and some of his "this is the only way to do it" may bother you, but most of his techniques work well. One more thing before I stop. Are there any winemakers out there and can we use this net to exchange recipes and technology?
