Aucbvax.5858 fa.info-vax utcsrgv!utzoo!decvax!ucbvax!info-vax Tue Jan 19 23:50:44 1982 Use of the list info-vax >From decvax!duke!bcw@Berkeley Tue Jan 19 23:49:04 1982 I'm not sure that there are only two sides to the debate over splitting fa.info-vax into two groups (fa.info-vax and fa.info-vms). The entire newsgroup structure with unix-wizards, net.bugs.*, info-vax (and now the proposed info-vms) is quite chaotic; there is much traffic in the other groups (such as unix-wizards) about vax hardware related topics. I was under the impression that info-vax was to be contrasted with unix-wizards as a parallel newsgroup for the vms people (albeit with a rather misleading name). I for one would be in favor of a complete reorganization of the newsgroup structure in these areas -- unix-wizards for strictly unix-related topics (no hardware), a list (say info-vms) for strictly vms-related topics, and lists (say info-vax and info-pdp11) for strictly hardware-related topics. These names are probably not the best because they don't have any obvious orthogonal relationships with each other, but have something of the force of tradition going with them. For that matter, I would probably subscribe to all of them (and, for example, any equivalent DEC-10 lists which might materialize ... there has been some traffic on these topics from time to time). I The topics discussed about unix, vms, tenex, and the associated hardware are all germane to my job (even though I don't deal with any DEC-10's at the moment, the discussion comparing operating systems with those on the DEC-10 has been educational; I do have to deal with both unix and vms and both vax and pdp-11 malhines every day). There are probably other people on the net in the same situation. Bruce C.
