Since my definition of virtual terminal may differ from yours, let me define virtual terminal in the sense that I've got in mind. A virtual terminal is a program that sits between the operating system and every program that the user runs. Much like a shell, but it is always there. The term virtual is used because to the program running, it appears that it is talking to a user at his terminal when it is really talking to a program (the virtual terminal). Most of the time the application program is talking to the user, but the user can cause the vt to step in for him and save him some work. One of the most rudimentary functions of a vt is to provide a "history" mechanism for all programs, instead of having it wired into each program on an individual basis. An example of a system that provides a virtual terminal type of capability is the process control stuff in Gosling's Emacs. Also, any pointers to systems that have some type of a virtual terminal system (or even just a good set of hooks for them) will be appreciated.
