Aucbvax.1624 fa.apollo utzoo!duke!decvax!ucbvax!TAW@SU-AI Thu Jun 11 10:06:56 1981 Another Xerox workstation. Xerox is arranging to sell their SAM (Simply Amazing Machine) 820 workstation through ComputerLand stores. The SAM apparently has a 80x24 character screen with a local processor and disk. It costs about $3000 with quantity discounts available. The most interesting feature seems to be its Ethernet compatibility. >From what I have heard on APOLLO and from other sources, the basic objection to the Star is its price ($16,500). If SAM can be connected to the same Ethernet as Star, and share file servers and print servers, it is not difficult to imagine a working group of one Star (for the group leader, of course) and 6 SAMs for the peons. Why 6? Because 6 SAM workstations cost about as much as one Star. Hmmmmmmmm, maybe Xerox ain't so dumb after all. ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
