From: noring@netcom.com (Jon Noring) Subject: Now Available! "Fanny Hill" in Hypertext Windows 3.1 Help Format Message-ID: Followup-To: rec.arts.books Summary: Distribute This Document Far and Wide! Organization: Netcom Online Communications Services (408-241-9760 login: guest) Date: Wed, 22 Dec 1993 07:52:01 GMT Lines: 94 [I apologize for the large number of cross-posted newsgroups, but this is a follow-up announcement to a legitimate inquiry I made to the same newsgroups (with some left out!) a couple of weeks ago regarding the legal issues of distributing "Fanny Hill". Many people wanted to be informed once the final document was made available on the Internet. So, here it is! Followup discussion, if any, has been directed to rec.arts.books.] Hello everybody, Finally! The Windows 3.1 Help file version of "Fanny Hill", or the "Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure" is available on the Internet. This document should be viewable by Windows 3.1, Windows NT, and OS/2 2.x (and possibly other operating systems with the appropriate special software). You will find at the end of this post the title page and a short abstract of "Fanny Hill". It is Shareware, and is issued as Version 1.0. I do appreciate everybody's feedback from my inquiry a couple of weeks ago concerning the legality of distributing "Fanny Hill". I believe these legal issues have been resolved to my satisfaction (I even contacted the ACLU for their advice!) Some of the terms and disclaimers I put into this document at first may sound very "strict" and overly "legalese", but if you read them carefully they are no more restrictive than most other Shareware programs. I am just trying to cover my rear as best I can because of the unusually sensitive nature of this erotic classic. Anyway, you can download "Fanny Hill" from anonymous ftp site: netcom.com /pub/noring/fanny/fanny10.zip Please try to wait a few hours after reading this post before downloading this file so as to minimize the burden on Netcom. It is important that you read the text files before using or redistributing this document, particularly 'sysop.txt'. As stated above, this document is Shareware, so give it a try and see if you like it. It is obviously intended to be used only by adults. I encourage you to redistribute this document far and wide - upload it to your favorite BBS and distribute copies to your adult friends and acquaintances. (I unfortunately have to warn our Canadian friends that because of the unbelievably repressive 1991 Butler Decision, possessing a copy of "Fanny Hill" in Canada is probably illegal, so download this at your own risk!) I hope you enjoy "Fanny Hill"! Merry Christmas everybody. Jon Noring (p.s., if demand warrants, I can e-mail uuencoded copies of fanny10.zip to those who do not have anonymous ftp access. Is there a newsgroup I could also legitimately post fanny10.zip uuencoded?) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- FANNY HILL MEMOIRS OF A WOMAN OF PLEASURE by John Cleland (1709-1789) Converted to Windows 3.1 Help Format by Jon E. Noring Shareware Version 1.0 December 19, 1993 (C) Copyright 1993 by Jon E. Noring >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Warning: This document contains sexually explicit language. For adults only. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< ABSTRACT OF THE BOOK CONTENTS: "Fanny Hill..." was written by John Cleland sometime in the period of 1748-49. This fictional novel is not only a classic work of erotica, it is also considered a literary masterpiece. Written in the form of two letters from a woman named Fanny Hill to an unidentified woman addressed only as "Madam", it describes in an earthy, matter-of-fact, yet elegant style Fanny's early life as a London "woman of pleasure". Because its message is timeless, the reader will find it to have as much relevance today as it did when it was first published. Fanny's discussion of Virtue and Vice in the closing paragraphs is particularly poignant and insightful. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- If you are an INFJ, then join the INFJ mailing list - ask me for more details.
