Robert A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF CTHULHU MYTHOS TALES Preface and Notes Copyright 1990 Chris Jarocha-Ernst All rights reserved The Cthulhu Mythos is a name given to the collected fiction, both prose and poetry, about a set of alien beings, invented by H. P. Lovecraft, his friends, and his admirers. It is what is today termed a "shared world": a number of writers use the same settings, characters, objects, and concepts in otherwise unrelated stories (i.e., it's not necessarily a series, though some series have been set in the Mythos). Most often, these are horror stories, though the Mythos does include science fiction, high fantasy, sword-and-sorcery, and, in at least one case, mainstream fiction. In the world of the Cthulhu Mythos, alien beings known to us only as as the Great Old Ones came to this planet eons ago and ruled. Through unknowable events (some claim a cosmic war with opposing entities, some merely a time of rest), these beings lost their hold and are now either asleep, somehow restricted to certain areas, or located elsewhere in time and space. Here on Earth, primal memories of these beings gave birth to many of humanity's diverse mythologies, and the Great Old Ones were revered as gods. As always, there were those who would exchange their very souls for a taste of terrestrial power, and who dared to record their rites in blasphemous books, and so the worship of the Great Old Ones began and continues in secrecy to this day. Occasionally, an innocent learns the horrendous truths behind the sheer veil of reality and glimpses the ultratelluric chasms that exist, unknown to most, beneath our mundane existence. The Cthulhu Mythos stories chronicle the adventures of such unfortunates, frequently in as high-blown a style as the latter sentences of this paragraph are in. SOME NOTES ON THE BIBLIOGRAPHY: 1. It's very idiosyncratic. I've used Robert Weinberg and Edward P. Berglund's A READER'S GUIDE TO THE CTHULHU MYTHOS (Albuquerque, NM: Silver Scarab Press, 1973), Jack Chalker and Mark Owings's THE REVISED H. P. LOVECRAFT BIBLIOGRAPHY (Baltimore: Mirage Press, 1973), Lin Carter's LOVECRAFT: A LOOK BEHIND THE "CTHULHU MYTHOS" (New York: Ballantine Books, 1972), and Frank H. Parnell's MONTHLY TERRORS (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1985) for much information, filling in where I can from my own research and the contents of my library. 2. I'm trying for the first publication of *everything*, rather than every publication of a selected few. There are plenty of HPL bibliographies available that cover every publication of his works. I want *every* Cthulhu Mythos-related story, no matter who wrote it. At the very least, you can use these titles in conjunction with your library's indexing sources to find more accessable places of publication. 3. Note that I take a very liberal view as to what constitutes a Mythos story. This work might more properly be called a bibliography of stories in the Cthulhu Mythos universe. In general, if a story mentions something found in another, accepted Mythos story, it, too, is a Mythos story, and mentions in yet other stories of things found in the first story make them Mythos stories, too. Merely evoking the atmosphere of the Mythos (or being a pastiche of HPL's style) is not enough. Being included in a self-styled collection of Cthulhu Mythos stories usually is, though I make note that a particular story may not contain a direct Mythos reference. 4. A judgment call on recurring people, places, and things: If it was *created* for the Mythos, or if a large number of its appearances are Mythos-related, I include all appearances. Examples are Brian Lumley's Titus Crow, Ramsey Campbell's Brichester and the Severn Valley, Clark Ashton Smith's Averoigne, Hyperborea, Poseidonis, and Zothique, and HPL's Arkham and Necronomicon. Often, characters created by one author are incorporated into the Mythos in a story by another author. The original author's stories usually then get mentioned in a note. However, still other stories, using that character, by additional authors are usually *not* mentioned, unless they, too, mention more widely accepted Mythos elements. For example, Sherlock Holmes is associated with the Mythos through a connection with August Derleth's Solar Pons; however, only the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories are considered Mythos-connected, and not the numerous pastiches written by many, many authors over the past hundred years. Similarly, mention of ghouls, the wendigo, or other elements of existing mythologies which have been incorporated into the Mythos is not enough to get a story included. These things must either be mentioned in connection with other Mythos elements, or they must be part of a consistant use of such elements, where one use is in connection with the Mythos. For example, HPL mentions Queen Nitocris in a couple of stories, including one Mythos story. Since his portrayal of Nitocris is consistent, I have included her name as a possible Mythos element. If another author (for example, Tennessee Williams or Lord Dunsany) uses Nitocris in a work without other Mythos connections, that is not enough to include the work in this bibliography. In certain cases, while no direct, unequivocal Mythos connections are made, both the spirit of the work *and* an assortment of elements not usually found together except in the Mythos have combined to make the work eligible. For a specific example, see Henry Kuttner's "The Graveyard Rats", which not only evokes Mythos atmosphere but links ghouls and the Phrygian Magna Mater, something done elsewhere in the Mythos proper and not, as far as I know, in real life. 5. The notes do not cover *every* term mentioned in a particular work, though in some cases I've tried for every significant term. At the very least, there's enough to show a linkage to other Mythos works. Where another source has indicated that a work is Mythos-related, but I haven't read that work, "\$" is given with the notes. 6. I've tried to favor professional publication over amateur/little press, as far as "first publication" goes, mostly because the pro mags are more readily available. However, so many Mythos tales have been written in fanzines that to ignore them is to do a disservice to Lovecraft himself, who, after all, originally wrote for the "amateur" press. I differ with Weinberg and Berglund in not including "Proposed" stories, as it seems of little advantage to do so: by the time a proposed story sees print, if it ever does, it may have a new title or may even no longer belong to the Mythos. 7. The scope has been limited to works of prose or poetry in English. (If you are aware of original Mythos works, published in other languages, which are not mentioned here, I would appreciate hearing from you.) Films have not been included (though their novelizations are eligible), nor have works in other media, such as comic books, television, or music. (But if you know of an exceptional work in such media which ought to be included, I'd like to hear from you.) 8. Chalk up any other inconsistencies/oddities to Note 1. I gladly welcome any corrections, additions, news of forthcoming related items, etc. If you have a copy of something I haven't read, *please* tell me what's in it, at least. I have most of the Chaosium CALL OF CTHULHU game supplements, but they are not included here as they aren't "fiction". (I'll still welcome news about them, though.)
