When I heard about it, my computers were a little smaller and not near as powerful as they are now. I still don't have a super computer, but who knows what the future might bring. :-) There I was... just prowling the Internet and thinking about some setup to some things on the computers and such. The thought hits me! "I'm going to have a DSL connection soon, the computers here are idle quite a bit.... Why not check into this again?" The Fidonews Editor and 1:124/6308 are now part of the SETI program. Yes, I know it's probably not going to find ET or anything else, but what the heck. It's interesting and doesn't seem to hurt anything on my systems... AND... I discovered that there is a group in the SETI program for Fidonet! :) Well... Of course there is a group for Fidonet in SETI. Fidonet has been around for a while. We are a diverse bunch and are computer nuts. :) Fidonet is known for being helpful and we're all good people. Why shouldn't there be a Fidonet group in something like this? Why should you join? Maybe you shouldn't... that's up to you. I did discover that if you join one of the groups, you can have a link to your web page with your name in the group for other visitors to click on. Heck, it's free advertising. There's no requirement for you to continue in the program... you can leave when you want. It's kind of fun to watch the data being crunched on your computer. The data is only processed when the screen saver is running. Besides... You might find ET. :-)) Jump over to the SETI web page at http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/ and see what you think. Check in the "Groups" area and do a search for Fidonet. You'll find the "Web Idiot" there at, or close to, the bottom of the list. :) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Taken from the Internet wdbonner@pacbell.net Through the eyes of a child The Seven Wonders of the World A group of Geography students studied the Seven Wonders of the World. At the end of that session, the students were asked to list what they considered to be the Seven Wonders of the World. Though there was some disagreement, the following got the most votes: FIDONEWS 18-43 Page 4 22 Oct 2001 1. Egypt's Great Pyramids 2. Taj Mahal, 3. Grand Canyon, 4. Panama Canal, 5. Empire State Building, 6. St. Peter's Basilica, 7. China's Great Wall. While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one student, a quiet little girl hadn't turned in her paper yet. So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The quiet girl replied, "Yes, a little. I couldn't quite make up my mind, because there were so many." The teacher said, "Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help." The girl hesitated, then read, "I think the Seven Wonders of the World are... 1. to touch 2. to taste 3. to see 4. to hear She hesitated a little, and then 5. to run 6. to laugh 7. and to love It is far too easy for us to look at the exploits of man and refer to them as "wonders" while we overlook all TRUE WONDERS, taking them for granted as merely "ordinary." May you be reminded today of those things which are truly wondrous in our lives. Ol'wdb ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-43 Page 5 22 Oct 2001 ================================================================= GUEST EDITORIAL ================================================================= From: Warren Bonner Deaf, Blind... and Kindness by Mildred Hondorf MAY PEACE FIND YOU AND MAY YOU ALWAYS BE KIND....... At the prodding of my friends, I am writing this story. My name is Mildred Hondorf. I am a former elementary school music teacher from DeMoines, Iowa. I've always supplemented my income by teaching piano lessons- something I've done for over 30 years. Over the years I found that children have many levels of musical ability. I've never had the pleasure of having a protege though I have taught some talented students. However I've also had my share of what I call "musicially challenged" pupils. One such student was Robby. Robby was 11 years old when his mother (a single mom) dropped him off for his first piano lesson. I prefer that students especially boys!) begin at an earlier age, which I explained to Robby. But Robby said that it had always been his mother's dream to hear him play the piano. So I took him as a student. Well, Robby began with his piano lessons and from the beginning I thought it was a hopeless endeavor. As much as Robby tried, he lacked the sense of tone and basic rhythm needed to excel. But he dutifully reviewed his scales and some elementary pieces that I require all my students to learn. Over the months he tried and tried while I listened and cringed and tried to encourage him. At the end of each weekly lesson he'd always say, "My mom's going to hear me play some day." But it seemed hopeless. He just did not have any inborn ability. I only knew his mother from a distance as she dropped Robby off or waited in her aged car to pick him up. She always waved and smiled but never stopped in. Then one day Robby stopped coming to our lessons. I thought about calling him but assumed, because of his lack of ability, that he had decided to pursue something else. I also was glad that he stopped coming. He was a bad advertisement for my teaching! Several weeks later I mailed to the student's homes a flyer on the upcoming recital. To my surprise Robby (who also received the flyer) asked me if he could be in the recital. I told him that the recital was for current pupils and because he had dropped out he really did not qualify. He said that his mom had been sick and unable to take him to piano lessons but he was still practicing. "Miss Hondorf...I've just got to play!" he insisted. I don't know what led me to allow him to play in the recital. Maybe it was his persistence or maybe it was something inside of me saying that it would be alright. The night for the recital came. The high school gymnasium was packed with parents, friends and relatives. I put Robby up last in the program before I was to come up and thank all the students and play a finishing piece. I thought that any damage he would do would come at FIDONEWS 18-43 Page 6 22 Oct 2001 the end of the program and I could always salvage his through my "curtain closer." Well, the recital went off without a hitch. The students had been practicing and it showed. Then Robby came up on stage. His clothes were wrinkled and his hair looked like he' run an egg beater through it. "Why didn't he dress up like the other students?" I thought, "Why didn't his mother at least make him comb his hair for this special night?" Robby pulled out the piano bench and he began. I was very surprised when he announced that he had chosen Mozart's Concerto #21 in C Major. I was not prepared for what I heard next. His fingers were light on the keys, they even danced nimbly on the ivories. He went from pianissimo to fortissimo...from allegro to virtuoso. His suspended chords that Mozart demands were magnificent! Never had I heard Mozart played so well by people his age. After six and a half minutes he ended in a grand crescendo and everyone was on their feet in wild applause. Overcome and in tears I ran up on stage and put my arms around Robby in joy. "I've never heard you play like that Robby! How'd you do it?" Through the microphone Robby explained: "Well Miss Hondorf... remember I told you my mom was sick? Well actually she had cancer and passed away this morning. And well....she was born deaf so tonight was the first time she ever heard me play. I just wanted to make it special." There wasn't a dry eye in the house that evening. As the people from Social Services led Robby from the stage to be placed into foster care, I noticed that their eyes were red and puffy and I thought to myself how much richer my life had been for taking Robby as my pupil. No, I've never had a protege but that night I became a protege, ...of Robby's. He was the teacher and I was the pupil For it is he that taught me the meaning of perseverance and love and believing in yourself and maybe even taking a chance in someone and you don't know why. This is especially meaningful to me since after serving in Desert Storm Robby was killed in the senseless bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City in April of 1995, where he was reportedly....playing the piano. ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-43 Page 7 22 Oct 2001 ================================================================= FIDONET WEB PAGE REVIEWS ================================================================= Collin County Station - Web Page Review By Frank Vest It feels kinda strange to be reviewing my own web page, but here goes. :-) The URL for the Collin County Station BBS Web Page has changed. The new URL is; http://pages.sbcglobal.net/flv I'm happy that the tilde (~) is gone from the URL. The old site is still up and functional and I'll get around to putting a "redirect" there in the future. I've still got some months on my old ISP to use up. :) Please make a note of the new address and update any links you might have. The page really hasn't changed much. It still has the Fido dog graphic and link to the actual Fidonet page by clicking on the dog. I've changed "hit counters" since the old one from my old ISP obviously won't work on the new address. I did keep the running total of hits intact. There's a link with the Texas flag to one of my other sites. It is about Collin County Texas and has links to some of the towns in the county. If you're curious about what Collin County Texas has in it, check there. :-) Once you get to the Fidonet page, you'll find a pull down menu with links to Fidonet information and some links on the page itself. I'm rather happy with the page, but I don't want to "toot my horn" too much about it. I mainly wanted to announce the new URL. If you get a chance and are bored, drop by and check this page out, You just might like it. :-)) Regards, Frank - Sysop, Collin County Station BBS - 1:124/6308 ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-43 Page 8 22 Oct 2001 ================================================================= FIDONET NOTICES ================================================================= Daylight Savings Time is Coming For those of us who observe it, Daylight Savings Time is coming. When he was 10 his dad passed away. He always wondered if his dad went to heaven or hell. He did excellent in his school classes and went on to Yale and graduated at the head of his class in computer science. After graduation he went to work for IBM as they had the most powerful, super-duper, computer that one could possibly answer any question of a logical nature. The computer passed every test he put it to. It even told him his entire ancestry when he ask it about his own origin. It was then that he remembered that he had always wondered if there was really a heaven and a hell. He thought that this super computer could possibly answer that eternal question. But how to phrase the question so the computer could properly respond? He decided to ask it if his daddy went to heaven. The computer never failed any task he had assigned to it. He sat down at the console and typed: "Where is my daddy?" The hard drive lights winked and blinked and the screen responded, "Your daddy's fishing at his favorite mountain trout lake". Johnny was totally shocked. He decided the computer had misunderstood the question. So he asked the computer, "where is my father"? The computer came back with the same answer. This left him in total disbelief. Then he got another idea, the computer works only on logical problems and after rethinking his question he typed: "Where is my mother's husband"? Instantly the screen responded: " your mother's husband died when you were ten years old, and your father is still fishing in his favorite mountain trout lake". ----------------------------------------------------------------- Old Guys From an E-Mail to Frank Vest On September 11th I indicated that if I could, I'd enlist again and help my country track down those responsible for killing thousands of innocent people in New York City and Washington, D.C. But I'm 60 now and the Armed Forces says I'm too old to track down terrorists. You can't be older than 35 to join the Army. They've got the whole thing backwards. Instead of sending 18-year-olds off to fight, they ought to take us old guys. You shouldn't be able to join until you're at least 35. For starters: -- Researchers say 18-year-olds think about sex every 10 seconds. Old FIDONEWS 18-43 Page 11 22 Oct 2001 guys only think about sex every 15 seconds, leaving us more than 28,000 additional seconds per day to concentrate on the enemy. -- Young guys haven't lived long enough to be cranky and a cranky soldier is a dangerous soldier. If we can't kill the enemy we'll complain them into submission. "My back hurts!" "I'm hungry!" "Where's the remote control?" -- An 18-year-old hasn't had a legal beer yet and you shouldn't go to war until you're at least old enough to legally drink. An average old guy, on the other hand, has consumed 126,000 gallons of beer by the time he's 35 and a jaunt through the desert heat with a backpack and M-60 would do wonders for the beer belly. -- An 18-year-old doesn't like to get up before 10 a.m. Old guys get up early just to show we can (and to steal the neighbor's newspaper). -- If old guys were captured we couldn't spill the beans because we'd probably forget where we put them. In fact, name, rank and serial number would be a real brain teaser. If it wasn't for the age barrier, I'd pretty much get into the Army without a hitch. According to the Army Internet site, I'd need to pass an entrance exam (officially called an ASVAB), but the sample questions I saw weren't exactly headache material. For example: A magnet will attract: a) water b) a flower c) a cloth rag d) a nail I took a wild stab and guessed, "nail," knowing they'd probably stick me in some desk job with Army Intelligence after Boot Camp. If 12 workers are needed to run 4 machines, how many workers are needed to run 20 machines? a) 16 b) 18 c) 3 d) 60 Let's see...three workers per machine times 20 machines ...errr...hmmm...uhhh...60? Finally, they wanted to know if I had command of the English language, just in case I had to describe an enemy camp from memory. Small most nearly means: a) Sturdy b) Round c) Cheap d) Little I knew this cheap, little sturdy guy once, but I wrote down little. Now you know where the first questions come from for the "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" game show. FIDONEWS 18-43 Page 12 22 Oct 2001 Boot camp would actually be easier for old guys. We're used to getting screamed and yelled at and we actually like soft food. We've also developed a deep appreciation for guns and rifles. We like them almost better than naps. The Army could lighten up on the obstacle course, however. I've been to the desert and didn't see a single 20-foot wall with rope hanging over the side. I can hear the Drill Sergeant now. "Drop down and give me...er...one!" And the running part is kind of a waste of energy. I've never seen anyone outrun a bullet. I'm reminded of the story of the young bull and the old bull standing on a hill looking down on the cows. "Let's run down there and make love to one of those cows," says the young bull. "How about we WALK down there and make love to ALL those cows," replies the old bull. Patience is something most 18-year-olds simply do not have. For good reason, too. An 18-year-old has the whole world ahead of him. He's still learning to shave. To actually carry on a conversation. To wear pants without the top of the butt crack showing and the boxer shorts sticking out. To learn that a pierced tongue catches food particles. And that a 200-watt speaker in the back seat of a Honda Accord can rupture an eardrum. All great reasons to keep our sons at home to learn a little more about life before sending them off to a possible death. Let us old guys track down those dirty, rotten cowards who attacked our hearts one month ago today. The last thing they'd want to see right now is a couple of million old guys with attitude! ----------------------------------------------------------------- Speeding Excuse From an E-Mail to Frank Vest There was a middle aged guy who bought a brand new Mercedes Convertible SLK. He took off down the road, flooring it up to 80 mph and enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left on his head. "This is great," he thought and floored it some more. He looked in his rear view mirror and there was a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper behind him, blue lights flashing and siren blasting. "I can get away from him with no problem," thought the man and he floored it some more and flew down the road at over 100 mph. Then he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this kind of thing" and pulled over to the side of the road and waited for the State Trooper to catch up with him. The Trooper pulled in behind the Mercedes and walked up to the man. "Sir," he said, looking at his watch. "My shift ends in 30 minutes and today is Friday the 13th. If you can give me a reason why you were speeding that I've never heard before, I'll let you go." The man looked at the Trooper and said, "Last week my wife ran off with a State Trooper, and I thought you were bringing her back." This pretty much sums up a lot of my feelings on the subject. And if any of this offends you, I will not apologize. Thank you, Barry Loudermilk...author of the following: -=-=-=-=- Broken Arrow, Oklahoma School officials remove "God Bless America" signs from schools in fear that someone might be offended. Channel 12 News in Long Island, New York, orders flags removed from the newsroom and red, white, and blue ribbons removed from the lapels of their reporters. Why? Management didn't want to appear biased and felt that our nations flag might give the appearance that "they lean one way or another." Berkeley, California bans US Flags from being displayed on city fire trucks because they didn't want to offend anyone in the community. In an "act of tolerance" the head of the public library at Florida Gulf Coast University ordered all "Proud to be an American" signs removed so as to not offend international students. I, for one, am quite disturbed by these actions of so called American citizens; and I am tired of this nation worrying about whether or not we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on September 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled in New York and Washington, DC when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. In fact, our country's population is almost entirely comprised of descendants of immigrants; but, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some native Americans as well, need to understand. First of all, it is not our responsibility to continually try not to offend you in any way. This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language, and our own lifestyle. This culture, called the "American Way" has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. Our forefathers fought, bled, and died at places such as Bunker Hill, Antietam, San Juan, Iwo Jima, Normandy, Korea, Vietnam, and the FIDONEWS 18-43 Page 28 22 Oct 2001 Persian Gulf, for our way of life. We speak English, not Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society -- learn our language! "In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some off-the-wall, Christian, Right Wing, political slogan -- it is our national motto. It is engraved in stone in the House of Representatives in our Capitol and it is printed on our currency. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation; and this is clearly documented throughout our history. If it is appropriate for our motto to be inscribed in the halls of our highest level of Government, then it is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. God is in our pledge, our National Anthem, nearly every patriotic song, and in our founding documents. We honor His birth, death, and resurrection as holidays, and we turn to Him in prayer in times of crisis. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture and we are proud to have Him. We are proud of our heritage and those who have so honorably defended our freedoms. We celebrate Independence Day, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Flag Day. We have parades, picnics, and barbecues where we proudly wave our flag. As an American, I have the right to wave my flag, sing my national anthem, quote my national motto, and cite my pledge whenever and wherever I choose. If the Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. The American culture is our way of life, our heritage, and we are proud of it. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. We are Americans, like it or not, this is our country, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his opinion about our government, culture, or society, and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great American freedom, the right to leave. Ol'wdb ----------------------------------------------------------------- FIDONEWS 18-43 Page 31 22 Oct 2001 ================================================================= FIDONEWS INFORMATION ================================================================= How to Submit an Article If you wish to submit an article for inclusion in the Fidonews, here are the -=_guidelines_=-: No more than 70 characters per line. This includes spaces. No right or left margins. Plain ASCII text _only_. Good rule is: If you can't type it on a plain typewriter, don't use it. Put a title to the article and your name. Note: Put the title in two times. The first time and first line should be with an * before it. The second time and second line should without the * and centered. This will help in the format since the title with the * is removed and used in the index and the other one will remain and show what the article is about. Articles that contain vulgar language might not be accepted. (the only real rule in this whole thing) Remember, we really don't know who might be reading the Fidonews. Deadline for article submission is Saturday, 12:00 midnight (24:00 hours) according to _my_ clock. I'm in the Central Time Zone in the U.S.A. That's GMT-6. Articles received after the deadline will appear in the next Fidonews. Help the Editor by following the above guides. Below are some subjects and the file extension for the article as set in the configuration file for the making of the Fidonews. The file name can be anything up to 8 characters. Please help by putting the file extension of the correct subject on the file name if known.. Put a .TXT on it and I'll try to figure out where it should be in the Fidonews. If you follow these simple guidelines, there should be little problem in getting your article published. If your submission is too far out of specs for the Fidonews, it will be returned to you and/or a message sent informing you of the problem. This DOES NOT mean that your article is not accepted. It means that there is something in it that I can not fix and I need your help on it. Send Articles via E-mail or Netmail, file attach or message to: Frank Vest Fidonet; 1:124/6308 E-Mail; fidonews@sbcglobal.net Please leave me a message telling me that you have sent an article.
