RE: Things I miss about the old Internet
My take on:
Things I Miss About The Old Internet (Incomplete) by Winter
Time period
For me the old Internet started in the mid-90's when I occasionally got access to the internet through:
a) the 'one' computer connected to the net on my mothers workplace
b) at the library
c) at a cybercafé
I would mark it's end as a couple years after the dot-com bubble.
What I miss
- Looking forward to dialing-up and retrieving your mails
- Altavista search page
- Curated Yahoo directories
- Browsing Geocities for Star Trek fansites
- Keeping a personal website
- Using a phone with irda connected to my Palm to fetch the latest RSS feeds
- Looking up cheat codes
- Slackware Linux
- Generic ads that were not personalised
- ♥ Netscape ♥
- The Linux community (especially when threatened by the FUD campaign by Microsoft)
- Hoarding animated gifs
- Joining IRC channels and talking about your day
