The first track on each side is instrumental. Both were recorded around the same time. Probably the same month. Neither were named until tonight as I write this in 2020. I came accross all four on an old hard drive tonight and thought that they were pretty ok and that it would be cool if a few people heard them. So they, along with the album and band name, got titles. The one titled "Dry Soil" here exists in a version with a vocal by a friend. I think I prefer the instrumental though. These tracks were found in the first place because the friend that sang on "Dry Soil" wanted my permission to use a re-recorded and re-imagined version on an album she is putting together. I'm glad I was able to find both the original with her and this instrumental version. Both instrumental pieces were recorded in the bedroom at the house I was staying at the time. I believe the guitars were through a Crate combo amp. That was put into pro tools and drums and direct bass were added. I'm sure the effects pedals on the guitar were legion but I cannot really remember what was used. The other two tracks are spoken word tracks. I was listening to Slint at the time and I think I had just met the woman who, ten years later, would become my wife. She was in grad school for creative writing and was really into poetry. I also like poetry a lot, but do not fancy myself a poet...but I like weird little stories without much context, so I made these. We, she and I, would later collaborate a bit between her writing and my music. But that is a story for some other liner notes. These two tracks were recorded with a borrowed drum machine and the cheapest bass guitar ever made (really, I think it was bought new for $60 US a few years prior). I'm not sure why I chose to pair these two sets of unrelated songs together other than that I came across them again after so many years and they felt alright together.
