Hmmm... Happily ever afters? Love conquering all? That sounds more cynical than I feel. But I deem that the theme of “love achieved” is rather jejune. It cheapens mortal joy to wrap love up in a comedy bow. Better to have the protagonists, who I shall imagine as two homely middle age women, turn to each other and say:
“Do you think we can make a go of it?”
“Well, I shall certainly try... You?”
“For you, after all... Yes!”
I don’t fancy films with Hollywood “beauty”. Whether chiseled plastic people or chiseled plastic buildings or chiseled plastic computer generated effects... The hyperreal cyber-æternal Los Angeles. None of it rings true. None of it calls to what we used to naively call virtue or humanity.
How I wish California would stop exporting its facile æsthetics. It’s ever so beastly.
Branagh’s version of Hamlet, mayhaps. And see it on a wide screen.
Sticks and stones. (For making, natch. It hasn’t changed.)
Steel grey.
I really couldn’t say!
