I’d look into cluster C personality disorders, it sounds a lot like what you’re struggling with. Visiting a therapist who specialises in PDs would be ideal, but I know that’s not doable for everyone. You could read the Klosko & Young book Reinventing Your Life - it helps you figure out what old patterns you’re stuck in and how to get out.

Look up “golden child/scapegoat dynamic”. That describes the phenomenon of one child being cast as ‘all good’ and the other as ‘all bad’

I’m sorry you’re in this situation. I would recommend talking to your school counsellor or a trusted teacher about what’s going on with your mom. They are adults whose job it is to look out for their students, and they might have useful advice for you.

/r/Codependency might be a good place to visit in that case. Speaking from personal experience, it’s not really possible to imagine life without codependence when you’re inside it. It takes a lot of effort to work through that dependence on others and change how you see yourself and the world.

It’s pretty much exactly about the situation you describe, though in a context where those sorts of comments have been going on for years rather than just a single instance, so the author is pretty fed up with her friend. I can confirm this. I’m re-listening to all the Delete This episodes and in one of them, Hank thanked Katherine for bringing him out to Montana. I noticed it particularly because it was something I hadn’t known (or even thought about).
