What about Orson Scott Card? Should OSC be free, hypothetically, to ensure homophobes moderate any Ender themed reddits? I dont think so.

Then you have equal potential for drama when you try and define "author" and unstable people who were technically involved in the creation of a collaborative work can step in and speak with that authority, wrecking shit in much the same way the current moderators of /r/xkcd are.
