2 questions:
1. If I am flying with my kids who are under 5, do I need to bring anything to verify their age/identity?
2. My husband has a YETI cooler backpack (pic attached) he wants to use as a carry on. Is that allowable?

Please don’t put kids in backpacks…

1. If it’s a domestic flight, then no.
2. Depends on the size. Measure it and compare to carryon size restrictions for your airline.

I have checked and took mine as a carry on for several flights.

Size wise I think the cooler is fine depending on what’s in it. As far as the kids in my experience I’ve never had tsa as for anything to prove they’re your kids. I think that’s more on the airline and have only been asked once when I, as a male was traveling with my 2year old daughter. Flown a dozen times with my wife and two daughters and never been asked for a birth certificate. That being said I’d rather have them and not need them than need them and not have them.

1: no. Just their boarding passes.
2: as far as tsa is concerned, it just needs to fit through the x-ray. That will certainly fit. As for whether or not the airline will allow it, you'd have to ask them. As an experienced traveler (and not as any official voice), at a glance I would guess that you can bring that as a carry on.

I’ve seen several of those, they’re perfectly fine as carryon regardless of bringing children

My father has travelled with this exact backpack, no issues.

The Yeti is fine! Also you only need passports for your kids if you're flying international; it might help to have an ID or passport for a domestic flight but it isn't necessary, as the only necessity for kids under 18 that don't have identifying documents is a boarding pass
