Hello, first time flying with a cake and I’m not sure if this is okay as carry on. Is it also okay if it’s in a store plastic bag or should I put it in a backpack or something? Thank you.

This is kinda more of an airline question. Let me explain:
TSA doesn't really care about how many items you have in hand when you go through. The cake itself is perfectly fine to go through, and we don't really care if you have that and a tiny purse and your carryon with something else.
The airline, on the other hand, might be more strict. You can go through TSA with a bunch of stuff and we will not call you out on it. The airline, however, will even if you have one tiny bag over the limit.
So take of that what you will in terms of how you want to carry your cake. It will be screened regardless and it'd be allowed to go through (given it's a normal cake)

They may have to take a slice for tasting.
Edit: oops I mean testing.
