hey there,

I'm currently in the research phase of my final film in VCE Media. I'm "interested" (I don't really know how to word it) in the troubled teen industry/ wilderness therapy, and l decided that's what l want to focus my final film on. I don't want to downplay or be disrespectful and I was looking for stories, things to make sure not to include etc

Hey, I'd be happy to help in anyway I can. I was in TTIs during my teens and funny enough, I am also a filmmaker, very recently a student filmmaker. I have done a short doc about addiction/recovery and as you mentioned, this things can be very touchy and some people won't trust your intentions.

I would suggest that while doing research and if you find/use any subjects for interviews or stories, your main focus should be building a genuine relationship with said subject. When I did my film on recovery I spent about 2 months really getting to know my subjects. It also helped that I am a person in recovery so there was an immediate understanding that I at least have first-hand experience with battling addiction. They eventually came to see that my intentions were good and a local N.A. meeting voted and agreed to let me come in with multiple cameras to shoot. As far as I know, this has never been done before, as it somewhat violates the rules of 12 step programs, anonymity as it relates to press, Radio, and film, etc.

But this particular group voted on it after checking with the regional director of NA.

All that being said, I am more than happy to be of any assistance to you that I can.
