I think that the wealth is secondary. They’re putting this time and money in because it’s heavily publicised and therefore the stakes are high (as people will get ideas).
And it’s heavily publicised because he’s a super rich white person.
In this case I would blame the media.
If they didn’t care, I doubt the police would be going all out to quite the same degree.
And to be clear, the media cares because it’s a huge story that people care about, even in the way they do.
I’m not familiar with the integrity of the New York police, so I don’t know how significant the difference in effort would be.
