View submission: TikTok reportedly plans ‘immediate’ Sunday shutdown in the US if it’s banned / The US federal ban will go into effect Sunday without a Supreme Court intervention.

Am I the only one who thinks it is a good thing? The sheer damage TT did the youth and destroyed their attention span.

The short video format still exists on Instagram and YouTube. If your issue is with social media damaging the youth then banning tiktok isn’t going to solve that. They will just go to Instagram.

If you feel that way, I would hope you’re consistent. Reddit is no better, and things like Instagram (even more of a hyper-focus on appearance) and YouTube (far right pipeline) are even worse.

So unless you think we should just eliminate social media and video sharing in general, banning TikTok ain’t changing anything. Kids aren’t going to magically just wake up from their phone coma, they’re going to find an alternative or two to TikTok and flock to them instead.

Maybe if that was the reason for the ban and maybe if the ban was on short-form content in general, but I’m not sure how the government could enforce that without violating the first amendment.

But thats not the reason for the ban, your opinion on whether TikTok is a negative or a positive for a group of people should be separate to your opinion on the basis of the app’s ban.

No. You aren't the only one that's stupid.

Lots of people are stupid and blame apps for damage to the youth. Just like how people blamed rock and roll for corrupting the youth, and video games, and dungeons and dragons, and controversial books.

Youtube and Instagram do the same thing. Twitter is absolute cesspool. If you think TikTok singlehandedly did anything to degrade younger people's mental faculties then you're just being intellectually dishonest. Kids these days are being raised by a generation that was handed an infinitely worse standard of living as adults than the generation before them. Their parents are failing them in real time and you're blaming a social media platform.

When TT gets banned and they go to Instagram and Twitter and consume the same form of content, what are you going to say then?

Absolutely, the trends, the toxic positivity, the pseudoscience and the attention span thing like you said. There are positives though too, the kids absolutely have their blindspots on some things but I think they have the means to dig into issues deeper or go down a rabbit hole on topics more than previous gens. That all could be said of the short video form and not TT as another commenter said though

I disagree. While that is an issue that platform is a revolution of human communication that flies in the face of all major companies and countries pre packaged narratives, protest org, discourse, and idea exchange. There’s also skits and recipes too.

TikTok seem to be playing hardball, both with this and with ByteDance not acquiescing and selling. I can't help but wonder whether they've miscalculated. The US law is unlikely to be changed, even if the new administration doesn't enforce it.

TT is trash, just like all social media apps in general. I’m not gonna cry over one less portal of shit.

TikTok is no different than any other social media platform. Honestly, Facebook and twitter has ruined the elderly way more than TT has ruined the youth.

That is social media as a whole. We had Vine and that was the same 30 sec format. Facebook has reels. So it cant just be 1 social media. Also this is not what it was banned for. A Most damage on attention span is done by parents allowing children before the age of 18m to watch more than 1 hr of TV and also allowing phone use. This based on scientific reviewed studies.

Now countries are actually making laws that prevent teens from using social media till 16 or 17 yrs of age. The UK and New Zealand.

While i agree with the tiktok ban, I never really used it, and it did not give me adhd. I have adhd because i just do. You cannot cause adhd in someone, and i feel like youre implying that you can with your last remark.
