Try as I might, I can’t play anything but a lefty guitar.

My year end bonus is coming in January and I want to pick up an extremely starter lefty guitar for maybe $100-$200. I thought about just going with Amazon but they seem a little too basic and not much lefty stuff.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I started recently. I've tried before but years ago, only with a loaner right handed guitar and I never owned a guitar so couldn't practice. This time round I decided I'd get a left handed guitar.

I decided I didn't want a really cheap one because they sound pretty bad and just aren't nice to hold. I wanted to have something a bit better than that so it would be a nicer experience playing and would give a better sound.

I eventually went with a new Fender Player Newporter lefty. I'm really pleased I did. It's about 500usd so quite a bit more expensive than your budget, sorry. It's a really nice thing to hold and the sound, when you get it right, is far far better than a friend's 150usd lefty from Amazon. We have the same teacher and he's amazed at how good the Fender is in comparison.

If you can manage to save a bit longer I really do recommend the Fender Newporter or one of the good range of lefty options Fender has at that price point. If not, I'm sorry I couldn't help more and I wish you all the best getting a guitar for you.

As a left handed player you’re crazy to go anywhere other than reverb.com. You can sort specifically for lefty instruments. I recommend a used Squire or Epiphone.

I have an Ibanez Gio lefty, not this model, but the model I have isn't sold in lefty anymore...but here's a lefty they sell now... https://www.ibanez.com/usa/products/detail/grx70qal%5C_5n%5C_02.html[1][2]

I've seen reviews online that call this guitar a surprisingly good entry-level guitar, and I agree, with my limited knowledge. It's been good for me so far.

I play righty, but anything Yamaha should be pretty cheap and high quality. Nothing wrong with Ibanez or Epiphone if those are closer to your budget.

Cheap guitars have gotten to be really great quality if you buy from a name brand source, a starter Epiphone made in 2024 is going to sound and play like a mid-range Gibson from the '70s.

Join us over on r/Leftyguitarists if you'd like. You'll find a pretty welcoming community over here.

Reverb.com[1] is going to be your friend as a left-handed guitar player. Most guitar stores, even the major chains are likely to have only 1-2 lefties in stock, if any.

For the $100-200 range you will likely get a really bad playing guitar. Avoid the urge to just Amazon it.

For someone just starting out, a bad playing guitar is likely going to discourage you from further exploration.

If you can get up to the $350-$400 range you can get a new Squier Affinity series Stratocaster or Telecaster which are decent playing guitars. If you have a guitar-playing friend who can set it up for you, great. Or you could take it to a local music shop and get it set up to play better.

For a basic amplifier, you can't go wrong with a Fender Mustang Micro (either the old one or the newer model). That way, you can practice/play all you want without disturbing anyone, just add headphones.

Can you just re-string a right handed guitar the other way? Or does that mess up the bridge and/or pickups? I learned how to bang out some chords right handed, but I'm wondering if I should learn scales and such left handed. But I only have a right handed guitar.
