Most of them went to New York. South Carolina is unique in that it’s one of only two states in the country where it’s had a black majority population at one time. The other state being Mississippi.

It's not only the black migration its the fact a lot of white people here are not from SC or if they are their family originally isn't.

So the mixed race people on the census we are just leaving off (yes they are labeled on the older censuses , there were mixed race communities near Bennettsville, for example)
