I feel like Bethesda's always had character creation systems that blow other RPGs away. The only one that comes close in my memory is Darklands. In that one, you created a character at age 15, and gave them an occupation for 5 years. After that, you could finish the character, or have them do another occupation for 5 years, rinse and repeat. You could have a 50 year old character start the game with somewhat reduced stats (due to age), but high starting skills (due to experience).

Agreed on Darklands. Also Megatraveler 2, despite being a poor computer implementation, had a nice character creation too.

I think we're kinda old :-)
