I had a really interesting conversation yesterday about horticultural therapy. I had never heard of this and asked what it was. Some of the key things mentioned reminded me of this sub. It’s about enjoying the tactile / sensory experience of gardening — sort of like a mindfulness practice. Noticing the colors and smells and feel of the plants, soil, roots, leaves, etc. Enjoy!

I'm not a gardener but I to think doing something with my hands and also being outdoors really goes well with simple living. Garden achieves both at once.

Many years ago I had a corporate job that was so stressful in threw me into clinical depression. I would come home and pull weeds—it was surprisingly soothing to me during that time.

Gardening is great for teaching you how to slow down, wait patiently for the work to pay off, and to connect with the seasons, all of which I find very mindful and relaxing

I'm sure this is exactly why my wife loves gardening so much. I enjoy the results walking around outside very much, but I'm the cook. That's my mindfulness practice.

Gardening gives you all the advantages of therapy, plus you get strawberries.
