We had both been born and raised in a cult and escaped from it. We met as adults who had made new lives from scratch. So he was the only person I’d ever met who could truly understand me and he loved me in a special way, really sensitively. We bonded over finding our spiritual life in nature. But he turned out to be a secret alcoholic, and all the lies, headgames, and broken promises made him unbearable.
