I am considering trying out a mattress on the floor as opposed to a bed. What quality brands (based in UK/Europe) are out there, and any specific type that people swear by?

I was just reading a post yesterday about someone’s soggy mattress as a result of not having it on a properly ventilated surface(leading to a wet and moldy situation). 🫣 Please look into this before going that route. As an aside, I built my mattress from components (spring layer and multiple latex layers in a cotton casing) and it’s better than any mattress I ever purchased pre-made. There are several YouTube videos and online forums for DIY mattresses.

If you want your mattress practically on the floor, give wooden pallets a try. Good air circulation around the whole mattress is important to keep it dry and free from mold. You don’t want to compromise your own health. That said, I have a foam mattress (H2/H3, I sleep on the H2 side) from Lidl (it’s a 140x200 but they have single mattresses, too) and it’s amazing. They cater to all sorts of budgets and have spring mattresses too if that’s more your thing.

Very bad idea to have a mattress on the floor. Mattresses require the support of a frame and ventilation.

If a mattress can't breathe, it will develop mold. You would be better off with a Shikifuton, which can be rolled up and stored during the day to give you extra room. If you ultimately decide that you want a mattress, Zinus makes great budget mattresses. Been sleeping on one for years and still love it.

I dont know the brand anymore, but I've slept on a mattress on the floor for about half my life. Two key things for me:

You can look into Japanese Authentic Futon (thicker and better material) in the UK, they have a place down on the South Coast near Chichester iirc. About £300 ? “japanesefuton co uk”. Would not say it is best budget friendly but is a comfortable option with some below caveats.

As the other post says, do note:

Personally much prefer a futon and sleeping on the ground than halfway up in a bed frame so despite more rigmarole, do what is most conducive to a good night’s sleep.

We have been so happy with our IKEA mattress. We went with Vesteroy and bought a latex topper (2" medium, from Sleep on Latex). We had a bad experience with a $1200 Tempur-Pedic mattress that had significant body impressions within a year. My husband and I were both having back and neck pain. I went down a rabbit hole and found that pretty much any foam mattress will eventually compress and leave body impressions. But springs won't permanently compress. So we searched for a pocket spring mattress with minimal foam layers and landed on Vesteroy from IKEA. It honestly has been a game changer. The springs offer lots of support, but it is a bit firm for our taste, which is why we got a latex mattress topper (latex will not compress over time). We've been using this set up for almost a year and are still very happy with it! Good luck ☺️

Definitely don't put a regular mattress on the floor. You can run into mold issues due to lack of ventilation.

Look up "japanese floor mattress sleepline" on Google. They're designed specifically for use on the floor.

Have you considered an air matress? The ones with a built in memory foam topper (ones designed for camping/car camping) are really comfortable.

Have a relative who's been using a full sized one for 5+ years. He keeps it out of the way during the day by propping it up against a wall.
