View submission: Introducing Collectible Avatars

Gotta ask, why does this even need to be an NFT or involve a blockchain. Why not just commission and sell the avatar styles directly and store everything in a normal database? I applaud finding new ways to pay/empower creators but turning everything into a speculative asset is not a good thing.

Separately, do you have any examples of what this will look like on Reddit? Are users with these avatars highlighted in any way in the comments? What will their profile hover cards look like?

to make it "non-fungible" they say.

The primary_key or UNIQUE_ID in the database are already non-fungible.

Even IP Addresses are non-fungible.

No need for this NFT bullshit, man.

I have honestly bought it because:

• i like it
• i use reddit quite a bit, so having my avatar looking unique (or rare at least) feels very pleasurable
• it's just 10$, and if it will be worth much in the future that would be very funny, and if it doesn't I don't care, it's just 10$...

Our primary goal with these Collectible Avatars was to find a way to allow redditors to showcase their art and earn money for their creations directly from the Reddit community. We also want to allow purchasers to have ownership over their purchase that they could use and transfer or sell to others.

If we didn’t make these blockchain-based, creators wouldn’t be able to earn additional revenue if Collectible Avatars were resold, and we wanted to make it easier for creators to earn money on both initial sales and secondary sales of Collectible Avatars, which isn’t easy to achieve without using a public blockchain.

But, we also realize there is a lot of speculation in the NFT market, so, in collaboration with creators, we set the prices for Collectible Avatars at reasonable, accessible prices.

Exactly! No need to blockchain ownership. Keep it in app and let interested users opt in to collecting avatars that are limited or 1/1. Keep trading in app also.
