They probably already invested too much time or money into this stupid project that they don't want to cut their losses and move on. They figure if they get a few suckers to buy their avatars then they'll be able to recoup some of the cost.

Wrong. 95% of people dislike crypto, the other 5% will drop half their life savings on it. From a selfish point of view it makes perfect sense even if it drives away the first group of users.
It's like mobile game microtransactions.

I feel like this company must be run by idiots. And I know people say that about a lot of companies but my god, what does Reddit's leadership actually DO around here? Like I feel like they could fire most of their management and executives and nothing about the operation or popularity or profitability of the website would change.
