There’s another component to it - the voting system.
On one hand they keep trash comments and posts at the bottom (and discourage them in the first place). On the other hand, they result in the hive mind and echo chambers.

true although other platforms can also easily create echo chambers (like I think there's block lists on Twitter that just block a massive amount of people that have an opposing view). that's why I don't block people
