Why are you trying to make chat happen? I've never felt a need to chat with someone on this site. We have posts where we can interact with each other.

Reddit is become less the ultimate "old school" link aggregator and forum and turning into yet another annoying social media site.

I agree. Most communities have Discord or don't want or need a chat. I haven't seen a single community I'm a part of have a chat.

there are some fringe cases where it could be useful, such as mod teams communicating with each other in private.
i can't see any use case for public chat rooms though. like most of the reddit developments over the last 5 years or so, they're just trying to copy what other companies are doing, but doing a much worse job of it. in this case, it's dollar store discord.

Our mod team does use chat to keep track of day-to-day stuff ("maybe we should edit this thing in the subreddit," "do you all think this post breaks the rules, seems borderline to me," etc)
That being said, I'd appreciate if chat just sent working notifications when you get a new message. On old reddit the chat logo hasn't notified me of new messages in our mod group chat for months.
And I agree with the overall sentiment that this website, with original appeal of being "a place to talk in forum-style discussions," is looking a little too much like "generic, bland social media page full of ads" these days, especially on the official app which I tried for about two seconds before deleting it
