It's called decades of extremely effective propaganda and messaging. They tell these folks that Democrats will keep them poor, take their money, and force them to rely on benefits. The irony being, of course, is that red states/areas are typically the poorest and most dependent on welfare. If you lie enough, people believe it. They'll never realize that they're punching themselves in the nuts as long as they're being told to blame others.
