View submission: Freud on Death: Religion as Escapism
Who cares if it’s escapism or not. If some find solace in an unverifiable afterlife, power to them. The world is full of suffering and anything to ease the pain is a positive in my eyes. Freuds machoism is apparent.I know how reddit works so let me nip it in the butt and say “I don’t think religion is all positive” but the topic at hand I believe is positive. Especially in today’s world that’s filled with depression and anxiety. It gives people hope. If someone holds the belief of an afterlife and their not pushing their beliefs on other people, let them have it. :)

I care if it’s escapism or not. False believes are inherently prone to exploitation. Religion has been used many times throughout human history to exploit people. There are many other ways you can reconcile death without believing in something because it can’t be disproven. It’s harder, for sure. But it’s better than taking the easy way out and adopt all kinds of unverifiable believes or falsehoods.

I agree. Inherent in using the term escapism is the implication that it is somehow psychologically unhealthy and reveals an inherent bias.
I wonder how much of the misery we see in today's culture is a direct result of society turning more and more away from religion and spirituality and becoming increasingly secular. Or how happy Freud was. They say misery loves company.
