So by default, we are the main character in our own storyline but the author invites us to be the author of our narrative instead so we can have agency on how to choose to lead our lives

Most people are side characters to other people's stories, doing as they are told. That or they MC as in don't care about others, which is just narcissistic tendencies being played out. They know they aren't that good, but act as if they believe they are.
Real agency is when you MC right. Don't get caught up in your guilt or shame. Don't get focused on your failings. Instead, start doing what a MC would do. They help. They care. They stand up and take the blow. They keep at it because someone else is dependent on them doing so. In short, be someone I would write about.
You may never make it, but the other option is to live by an assigned narrative, from an external source, and live with the knowledge you are a sham that acts good, but does little good. It shunts you back to the top track. You are a side character in someone else's narrative & you choose to continue that, it's easier.
That's unfortunately is most people. Banal conversations, following someone else's script about justice, while wandering about on the same retreaded ground, because that is all they are. **They end up as shills and aren't even getting paid or aware they have been coopted to a narrative they care little about or play a significant part of.**
In short, their life isn't about them and it's becoming a problem, even if they pretend it is.
