But Mr Cook heaped doubt on the centrepiece of the Liberal policy, to trial speech pathology services in primary schools, insisting long wait lists won’t be solved by funding. “It’s not for a lack of money, it’s for a lack of workforce,” he said.

I think that actually valid criticism, for a policy that's actually really well meaning and one that would be an efficient use of taxpayer funds.

Who knew that the Liberal Party was capable of proposing a well-meaning policy? But what Faragher said is self contradictory.

“The advice that I have received talking to many people, including Speech Pathology Australia . . . they believe that there is capacity to do that.

I'm not really sure how she can be confident of that and then turn around and say:

primary school aged children are waiting nearly two years to see a paediatrician, nearly two years to see a clinical psychologist and **over 10 months to see a speech pathologist**

I'm willing to bet that we also don't have a full idea of what the scope of the problem is, however early intervention is always better.

I mean I am no longer in that "market" but full time is probably good for the kids and definitely better for parents rather than juggling them back and forth between different care centres.

Just wanting to give a teachers perspective on this:

As kindy isn't compulsory, it's also not funded by the DoE. Which means that unless the kindy is run as a private business, public schools need to pay for it out of the budget they've been allocated for everything else (wages, supplies, electricity bills). Unless this full time kindy scheme ALSO came with increased funding for public schools to match, you're just asking schools to stretch their meagre budget further so that parents can have free babysitting.

It's already insulting that the pursuit of education and building human beings is considered secondary to making sure Tommy isn't getting in the way of his parents earning potential. At the very least, if we're going to be treated like babysitters, at least give us the courtesy of resourcing us appropriately so we're not doing it out of our own pockets...

I personally think it's too much and I'm glad it wouldn't come in until after my youngest has gone through kindy. 4 year olds are still so little, kindy should be about easing them into full time schooling.

Every day right off the bat feels like a lot for a little kid who's spent the majority of their time home with a parent, I can see how families with their kids already in daycare would find full time appealing though.

Maybe they could just scrap the half days? And make the age a little more flexible? WA does not allow you to have any flexibility on enrolment age. My daughter was a hair over 3.5 when she started kindy. She was just a baby. Still napped occasionally. I wonder if things would have been different if we could have held her back a year? I understand kindy is funded for 2.5 days a week? Our school broke it up into 2 days a week in the first semester and 3 days in second semester. Worked well. Perhaps 3 days a week could be funded? 5 days of school is too much for these little ones. It’s different to daycare, there’s much more opportunity for downtime during a daycare day.

I loved part time kindy for the year before pre-primary full time. It was a great transition for my special needs daughter and myself. Other states do kindergarten full time because it’s age-equivalent to our pre-primary.

I’m not some boomer with rose-coloured glasses for the “good old days either, kiddo is starting year 3 this year.

The speech thing I’m majorly in favour of though, mine goes to a school for kids with speech and language disorders and they’re AMAZING. She started kindy with 3 recognisable words and she’s 90% understandable now which is nothing short of a miracle to me. Still not worth voting libs for tho.

I'd rather not pay for the daycare of the economy so that people can drive to work doing bulshit jobs while Anglo American, BHP et all walk away with the crown jewels leaving us crumbs.

Fuck you I *own* every gram of iron ore, I should spend 1 day working, considering all the wealth I'm being robbed of daily by this government - and all the wankers previously.

Seems like a very bad idea. Some kids may be fine, but a large majority are going to be burnt out by schooling.

Especially with less play based learning.

Sounds like a good policy - though will have some pretty decent hurdles to overcome.

IE the current schedule allows two different groups of kids share the same teachers and classroom space. Going to full time will require additional staffing and room availability.

School should be 9 to 5 with the last 2 hours each day being sport or extra catch up classes for the kids having a tough time.

Ridiculous. 3yr old shouldn’t be at school full time & schools don’t have the capacity. As it is most schools do 2 -3 days max as the classrooms are used by other kindy kids on the other days. Increasing to full time would mean needing to build additional classrooms at every school across the state. The average 3yr old is barely toilet trained & still having naps during the day. No way they will cope with full time school as well. If you want to make a difference to parents reduce the length of the school holidays. School holidays are around 16weeks a year - the average parent gets 4 weeks if they are lucky. It’s just insane.

Roger Cook announced Wombs will be grafted onto trees so couples can have a tree impregnated via IVF and you'll never have to raise or see your own children until they're valuable tax payers like you!
