I get what you’re saying but sometimes it matters. I was a victim of a hate crime and it turns out there were a select few people in my area targeting people like me. I didn’t know to look out for this kind of behavior and it left me vulnerable. Now all my neighbors are aware and one of the people responsible for these crimes has been apprehended.

What part of your anecdote required the police to immediately invent and announce a motive?
Clearly the fact that a number of Palestinians were involved is enough for you to derive that this was probably targeted, so why do you also need a premature official explanation?
