View submission: Three Palestinian students shot and wounded in Burlington, Vermont, police say

I went to college in Burlington in the early 2000s. It was around the time gay marriage was on the ballot. The anti catch phrase was Take Back Vermont. Those signs were everywhere once you got out of city limits.

Edited to correct the anti catch phrase

I believe the phrase was "Take Back Vermont".

And then someone made some "Take Vermont from Behind" bumper stickers as a response.

Ha. Ain't nobody forcing their way into your jank-ass backyard to get gay married.

In NC, I heard "why do they get special rights" a lot. Special? You're just as free to marry another woman if you want to, ex coworker who's name I forgot. You never would want to? So you have a right you want, and one you'll never use, *just like they do*.

I don't really remember seeing those signs, but I did see a lot of Take Back Vermont[1] signs.
