Hi everyone,

We want to notify you that the “Start Chatting” toggle is now available in your community settings* on new Reddit. This toggle will enable you to turn Start Chatting on or off in your communities. To view the toggle, you can navigate to your mod tools and click on the “Chat” section.

Start Chatting doesn’t go live until Tuesday, June 30, so you have a week to discuss with your mod team and determine how you would like to proceed. That said, we won’t actually roll out the feature to all eligible communities on the first day. We will be rolling out the feature in phases as we keep an eye on our metrics to ensure the chat rooms are safe for users. We will also send a modmail on the day the feature is live for your community. After June 30, the toggle will continue to live under community settings.

As mentioned previously[1], not all communities will be opted into Start Chatting by default. If your community was not chosen for the opt-in, then you will see the toggle, but it will be default “off” AND the toggle will be disabled. We’re still working through the plan for making the feature available to the communities that currently don’t have the ability to opt-in.

So far communities reported positive experiences with Start Chatting in our discussions with them. Users also seem to be enjoying connecting with others. We hope you will give it a shot.

Please let us know before you turn the disabled toggle to "on", if you plan to do that.

Please do not auto-enable things. Just inform the setting is available for those who do want it.

\not available on old Reddit

You need to fix that. *Especially* for mod-facing features, there should not be a requirement that we use the redesign. Those of us moderating your communities for you should be able to continue to use the normal Reddit.

this feature should have been tabled after its disastrous initial rollout, when the admins added a "start chatting" button to /r/rape, then accused the moderators of /r/rape of doctoring a screenshot that showed it. And then edited their comments to remove said accusation.

A month or two later, STILL nobody wants this feature and the only feedback you're actually getting from mods is "Remove this garbage and let us moderate our own communities". This quote

So far communities reported positive experiences with Start Chatting in our discussions with them.

Is hilarious. Read the comments of ANY admin posts on this topic to see what moderators really think.

Do I have to go through new reddit and into each of my communities to check if they've been opted in/out, or is there any sort of notification sent for those?

I don't moderate anything where having a chatroom is really in the mood of the space, so knowing if I need to go opt is preferable to needing to go check.

u/mjmayank! I got a bunch of these notices today and I went back to check on my bigger subs and this stupid thing was "Enabled" AFTER we had already turned it OFF.

PLEASE DO NOT enable anything by default!!!

Furious right now. We absolutely do NOT want any chats. That is what Discord is for.

HOW THE FUCK DO I DISABLE THIS IF ALL I CAN USE IS OLD REDDIT!?

I'm using an old iPad and new reddit is basically useless, especially for trying to do mod tasks.

I used to go to the local library when I needed to use new reddit, but they've been closed for months and unlikely to be open soon.

As mentioned previously, not all communities will be opted into Start Chatting by default.

I DO NOT THINK YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT OPT-IN MEANS.

Opt-in is voluntary and at the discretion of the user or sub. This sounds like "forced-in" with an opt-out.

These are direct group chats that do not require moderation support and reports are sent directly to the admins.

My man, what do you mean they don't require moderation? If people are chatting on *our subreddit*, and they get matched with god-awful people who insult, bully and threaten them, then who do you think is going to get PMs about it? Who do you think is going to get blamed?

We are, dude.

This *absolutely* requires moderation. I'm glad that "reports are sent to admins", but are y'all going to fill us in? If a visitor to our subreddit starts chats to harass others, we need to be able to deal with the issue, including banning them if necessary.

I am incredibly concerned that y'all do not understand how the internet works, how people work, how bullying works, and in general how your product works.

Is it off by default or being forced on for us to opt out?

EDIT: /u/mjmayank Any response to this? It isn't clear in the post.

What a completely disrespectful move, to give us a warning on the same day you're forcing us into this shitty feature. I even had to disable my old.reddit plugin to see the settings.

Thanks a bunch, reddit staff.

How about giving subs the option of partaking, rather than including subs by default and making them disable the feature.

in one of my subs the current text version seems to say "this feature goes live 6/16", might want to change that :)

There is nothing in the chat settings for some of my communities. Is that because the subreddits are not opted in? When I click on "chat settings" it just says "No chat settings in..." with the name of the subreddit. Some of them do have the toggle as shown in the screen cap, but the rest do not.

I don't want this feature on the sub r/QuietStorm but since I still use old reddit I don't see where I can turn it off. May I request that you have someone toggle this to "off" for me? This feature should be opt-in for the subs that want it, not force-fed to every sub whether they do or not. Thank you.

Okay, so I've had this toggle turned off on all my subs ever since the toggle was available in those subs. And yet that choice was ignored and the banner went live on all those subs this morning.

This feature is unmoddable and straight garbage. I can't believe I have to go in an manually turn it off instead of having a community opt in. Why, why is reddit so hellbent on making modding harder each day?

In one community's settings the slider is in the "off" grey position but I can slide it "on" to blue; does that mean when this goes live it will be turned off by default *unless* we choose to turn it on and save that setting?

Just checking my subreddits I don't have any options in that tab for some of them. Just a message saying:

No chat settings in r/aerospace

Will we have the ability to isolate chat communities or mutually ban communities from chat? E.g. Pokemon is super diverse on reddit, grouping related subs could go terribly wrong when you have the "shiny giveaway" folks hacking Pokemon in their games to trade to other people and advertising/dominating the chat.
