I love how we're trying to make sense of these moves based on pure hope because surely nobody who could convince a plurality of Americans that he would be a good president would wantonly start "The dumbest trade war in history" (according to the WSJ). Right? Right?

Not in my case. I'm fully comfortable with the conclusion Trump is a maniac, but he's not a total moron, so it's possible some semblance of sense is actually happening in his head... But he latches onto half-baked plans and excuses them as "leverage." He's very much used to being a bully negotiator, and it keeps working in the political sphere by tapping into anger within the electorate... It may even work with smaller counties as president, but what I think he completely missed is that good will is not an infinite resource. At some point, probably not too far off, alienating allies has a deleterious effect.
