functionality is important, but i have a question. is consumerism buying things that make you feel better and last longer? i i get minimalism is being happier with less but if nicer things make me feel nicer is less of them still considered consumerism? that was kind of my original question

Find a balance that works for you. There is no minimalism police. If you find that you're focused too much on your stuff (getting rid off, buying more, replacing), ask if it's serving you. But there's no need to wear jeans you hate especially if you wear them every day. If your goal is to reduce distractionss, and every day you're like "i hate this cheap broken coffee maker", then it's a distraction, buy a new one.
