Fire grew fast. Gabreski Airport evacuated. Area partially evacuated around 2pm.

Some borders of the fire are controlled.

A lot of trees were dead there plus the wind not good. My heart breaks for nature and wildlife, between things like this, the huge lakes being destroyed during the storms and people just cutting down trees on their properties left and right it feels like a depressing time. No one cares enough to restore or regenerate or preserve and protect. It hurts to watch.

fires out in the pine barrens are a normal part of the forest cycle there. it's been a long time since there was a significant one... 20+ years so people have forgotten. the pines have fire adapted cones fire wipes out the competition and they regrow.

I’m originally from LI lived in the pine barrens. I now live in Colorado. Fires happen here all the time, half the time they’re doing prescribed burning to prevent wildfires. Long Island could definitely benefit from something like that as the climate changes, to prevent something like this from happening again, although since the fire did happen, it’ll probably be okay for the next decade or so with a ton of new growth
