I've always felt the printing press argument was just a lazy excuse. Polish printing houses of the late 15th and early 16th century had no trouble creating as many special fonts and diacritics as they wanted. Need ś, ź, ń or ć? No problem. Vowel length you say? We can make that happen. And what do those accent marks do? Idk, add them as well. What's that, clients from Kyiv need Cyrillic prints? We got you covered.

Meanwhile the English proceeded to make their orthography worse and then said it's all the Germans' fault.
