So I have a Kindle Scribe and a Kindle Paperwhite but I’ve been wondering if I should also purchase the basic Kindle for traveling. Is it too much to have three Kindles? Do other people have multiple for different purposes?
I love my PW for reading while at home and the Scribe is my work notebook, but I’ve been thinking it would be nice to have a small and transportable Kindle for reading when on the go and travelling.

Depends on the person. Personally I only have one which is the basic and it suits all my needs

To be honest, I've never understood people who say that the Basic is more transportable. I have a Paperwhite and I just put it in my small cross body bag and it easily fits and goes with me everywhere. I've never understood the need for both a PW and a Basic.

I mean it’s your life and your money - if you’re comfortable buying another and want it, then go for it.
However, I’ll just throw out that I don’t understand the “portability” argument between the models. It’s a kindle. They’re all extremely lightweight and take up exactly no space in a bag if you’re traveling. We travel with laptops and iPads and whatever else all the time. People act like the PW is this giant monstrosity that you could never possibly bring outside because it’ll slow down your journey and make movement next to impossible 🤣 I upgraded from my old Basic to a PW at the end of 2023 and there has been absolutely no difference except the new one actually turns on lol and the screen is bigger so reading is nicer. It is just as portable and easy as my old Basic. People also say it doesn’t fit in their pockets but I’ve been able to slide my PW into plenty of jacket pockets with ease so idk.
I didn’t mean to rant; I just feel like I see this discussion so much on this sub and I feel like I’m missing something because people act like carrying a Kindle is this huge burden and I’m confused.

The Paperwhite is like 1 inch bigger than the basic, is that really worth getting a whole separate Kindle for?

I'll never understand why people get more than one Kindle. I cannot find a good logical argument for it. Isn't the point of a Kindle that you can have all of your books on one device instead of having to carry multiple books (or in this case, devices) around?
Getting more than one just sounds like consumerism to me, to be honest.

I don’t have multiple Kindles! No judgment whatsoever, but I personally just don’t see the need to have more than one beautiful device. The point for me is to have something compact and easy to carry so there’s really no need to double or even triple up on that. I have the new colorsoft and I love it. The size is perfect and easy to throw in any bag

I’d say probably 100 kindles is too many kindles.

It's your money, but I still can't wrap my head around the multiple Kindles thing. I understand getting a Scribe since it has additional functions beyond the standard Kindles.
I've actually been on the hunt for a second-hand basic for when I travel out of the country, since I will cry a million tears if I lose the Signature my husband gifted me. But if I don't find one within my price range, I still plan to bring the Signature.
The only other reason why I've considered a second kindle is because I ARC read books. I may need to read an ARC while I want to keep my Kindle on airplane mode because of Libby books. 🤣
Knowing what others have said about the Signature's portability, maybe stop by a store and compare sizes. Think about how often you use both your current Kindles and go from there. For me, I know I wouldn't have a need to toggle between two devices..

To me, more than one is too many but I think if you were going to have more than one, the two you have make the most sense! I definitely wouldn’t buy the basic—the PW is perfectly portable :)

I’d say Paperwhite is pretty portable and travel friendly. Unless you usually go for smaller purses then basic will come in handy

I personally think the paperwhite/colorsoft size is easily transportable, so i don’t really see the appeal of the basic size. but then again i am always traveling with a purse/backpack so it’s not like im putting it in a pocket or something

You can only read one at a time so I’ve never felt the need for more than one

I currently have 2 kindles: a Paperwhite and a basic. I am not a bag person. My EDC is literally my Apple Watch, my key fob, my phone, my ID and some cash tucked into my phone case. Many times, I even leave my phone behind. The basic fits in my pockets with no issues. My side pocket in my leggings, my interior coat pocket, my jacket pocket, my work pant’s pocket— literally everything.
So if I’m just walking to the coffee shop with my dog, I’m gonna have my kindle and I’m gonna sit down and read for a bit just by virtue of having it with me at all times. I can throw it in my pocket on the way to my exercise class and read at the park on my way home. I can’t do that with my PW.
Since getting my basic, I read on it all day until it get dark and then I switch to my Paperwhite with max screen warmth on.
Bonus is it also fits in my mini tote better than my PW does.

My wife at one point had 3 Kindles. Home, work and buisness trips. The work and buisness trip Kindles were older Kindles that we had upgraded from. So if they got lost or stolen it was no tragedy.
So if you have a need for more than one Kindle then go for it. You don't have to have anyone's approval.

I have a 4th gen and just bought a Paperwhite. I justify this because the 4th gen is no longer supported by the kindle store and I can’t add anything to it so it’s frozen with the books I put on it between 2011 and ~2018, which I do not want to get rid of and can’t transfer to my newer PW (old account is lost), but want to still be able to access new books. This absolutely feels like too many kindles for me personally, but the 4th gen is now sort of a readable archive and I sure got my $80 worth of use out of it over the last 14 years and counting. I hope it never dies, but glad to have the newer one to keep reading new releases and discovering new books.
